The next 'Ghostbusters' is happening and it will star 'hilarious women'

The long-rumored third Ghostbusters movie is finally happening. Paul Feig, creator of Freaks and Geeks and director of The Heat and Bridesmaids, says he's working on the film, which will be a reboot of the franchise.

Feig said on Twitter today that the new Ghostbusters was officially in the works, confirming earlier reports of his involvement.

"It's official," Feig said. "I'm making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with [Katie Dippold] & yes, it will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call."

Dippold wrote the screenplay for The Heat and has written for television shows Parks and Recreation and Mad TV.

Talk of a third Ghostbusters film has been happening for decades, and star Dan Aykroyd wrote a script that featured the characters from the first two films training a new, younger generation of Ghostbusters. Actor Bill Murray said he was hesitant to return to the franchise, but director Ivan Reitman said he would return to direct a third film. Original Ghostbuster Harold Ramis, who co-wrote the first film with Aykroyd, died earlier this year.

The original Ghostbusters — Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson — lent their voices to 2009's Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which was set after the events of Ghostbusters 2.
