Reveals focus on AI, security.

UNSW Australia has raised its targets for a large academic recruitment drive by over 50 percent, with plans to build capability in disciplines including artificial intelligence and data security.

UNSW to recruit 1000 researchers

The university earlier this year unveiled its “largest” ever undertaking to recruit “up to 130 world-leading researchers and rising stars as well as 500 new PhD candidates through fully funded scholarships".

But it has now expanded the initiative significantly with new goals to bring on board “up to 290 new world leading researchers and rising stars and 700 new PhD scholars".

Not all of the almost 1000 researchers will operate in tech-specific domains; the university is yet to detail publicly how it plans to divide the recruitment drive among faculties.

However, it revealed it intends to focus on researchers with domain expertise in “artificial intelligence, telecommunications and data security” for its faculty of engineering.

It is also looking to grow its research expertise in geospatial systems as well as in bioengineering and health, among other engineering domains.

"UNSW is very pleased to be able to extend our world changers recruitment initiative to 2025, announcing several hundred additional scientia fellowships and PhD scholarships," a spokesperson said.

"This is a major investment in world-class talent."

The large-scale recruitment drive forms part of the university’s 10-year strategy, which will see it through to 2025.

It is yet to reveal in which domains it will offer PhD scholarships, which form the largest part of the recruitment drive. It said it will release more details next week.
