Why Burger King is paying for this couple’s wedding

Fast food giant Burger King is paying for an Illinois couple’s wedding. Why? Because their names are Joel Burger and Ashley King, so it’s being dubbed a Burger-King event.

The couple, who have known each other since childhood, learned Monday that the restaurant bearing their names would pay for the July wedding.

“Oh my God, it’s going to be crazy,” said King in a told The State-Journal Register.

“When we heard about the happy, Burger-King couple, we felt an overwhelming urge to celebrate their upcoming marriage,” Eric Hirschhorn, a Burger King spokesman, told Register. “On so many levels it felt like fate; they found each other and their story found us.”

This isn’t the first time a brand has gotten involved in a couple’s wedding plans in recent days. Southwest Airlines surprised a couple with an airport wedding shower earlier in April.

Owned by Restaurant Brands International, Burger King reported in February that comparable sales rose 3.1% last year. So far in 2015, rival McDonald’s reported a 4%-dip in domestic same-store sales. The company said that’s due to “ongoing aggressive competitive activity.”
