Today, Michelin, the tire company that also publishes restaurant guides, announced its 2018 star count for Italy. Italy has one new three-star restaurant this year: St. Hubertus, in the northern mountain town San Cassiano, joins eight other restaurants in Michelin’s top ranked slot.
The full Italy guide includes 356 starred restaurants. There are 41 two-star restaurants, including new selections Vun in Milan, Magnolia in Cesenatico, and La Siriola, also in San Cassiano. The 2018 guide also features 26 new one-star restaurants, bringing that total to 306.
In a seeming attempt to stay relevant, Michelin points out that 30 percent of the newly starred restaurants are run by “talented young chefs under 35 years of age.” However, age isn’t guide’s most noted problem. Michelin’s critics instead take issue with its failure to represent women and the fact that a majority of starred restaurants serve high-end European and Japanese cuisine. There’s no clear attempt to address those issues in this year’s Italy’s guide.
