A few years ago, we reported that the bare bones Mini Cooper-based Mini Moke would be revived with Chinese power and tooling. Moke fans around the world were probably excited to see the return of the strange vehicle, but American fans couldn't get it. A company called Moke America plans to change that when it starts selling a Moke reproduction here this summer.
Moke America will start with just an electric offering called the e-Moke. The company claims a range of 40 miles and a top speed of 25 mph. It should reach a full charge on household 110-volt electricity in 8 to 10 hours, and it's street legal. Of course it's quite clear that it's only for use around small towns. Apparently a gasoline-powered one will be available later, and Moke America says it will use a Chery engine and reach a top speed of 65 mph.
If this all sounds familiar, it's because the Moke International model also offers both electric and gas-powered models. The latter, like the Moke America version, is also powered by a Chery engine with a similar top speed. In fact, in some of the photos on both sites, the same wheels can be seen. Moke America told us that they have no connection to Moke International.
In case you're interested in the retro runabout, Moke America plans to start selling them here this summer, and is taking orders now. It retails for $15,975, and ordering one requires a 50 percent down payment. That seems pretty steep for an electric with such a short range and low top speed. However, for running around an estate, gated community, or small beach town, it could be a fun runabout.
