Manchester United crowd turn on Louis van Gaal over Anthony Martial substitution

Old Trafford crowd boo the Manchester United chief before Wayne Rooney's goal spared the Dutchman's blushes

Old Trafford fans were unimpressed with Louis van Gaal's substitution

After 13 days 11 hours and 79 minutes, Manchester United finally scored a goal as Louis van Gaal's side secured a tense 1-0 victory over CSKA Moscow.

Wayne Rooney grabbed the all-important goal, making him the first Englishman to score 30 goals in the Champions League.

With Manchester United looking to be heading for a fourth 0-0 draw in a row, Louis van Gaal's decision to substitute Anthony Martial for Marouane Fellaini was met with resounding boos around Old Trafford.

Just moments after the Frenchman was hauled off by Louis van Gaal, Wayne Rooney squandered what looked to be a golden chance to put United one-up, getting the ball caught between his feet before being dispossessed two yards out.

The reaction from the Old Trafford crowd came just minutes after the home supporters could be heard desperately urging their team to show greater attacking intent:

Just when it looked as if Manchester United's run of games without a goal would reach an incredible 14 days, Wayne Rooney met Jesse Lingard's cross to head United in front. And nobody could quite believe it had happened.

Rooney's goal also came with personal significance, as the 30-year-old joined Denis Law as the joint-second highest goalscorer in Manchester United's history.
