Tesla is adding a new 75kWh battery option to its Model S sedan. The new battery will deliver 259 miles of range, up from 240 miles in the 70kWh battery, which will still be available. The larger 90kWh battery boasts 294 miles of range. The 75kWh battery will be a $3,000 option when it launches later this week. The news was confirmed to The Verge by a Tesla spokesperson. It was first reported by Electrek, which saw it disclosed on the California Air Resources Board website.

The 75kWh battery was launched on the Model X a few weeks ago, and Tesla soon decided to bring the offering to the Model S sedan as well. It's possible that the battery will be the new base model once Tesla sells out of the 70kWh supply. The company did something similar when it launched the 90kWh battery last year, offering the older 85kWh battery for a while before quietly killing it off.

The Model S will now be available with 70, 75, and 90kWh battery packs, with all of them available in either rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations. Pricing and range options are visible at the Model S custom configurator on Tesla's website.
