There is no stopping the trend for leather this autumn, which has taken many forms, from jackets and coats to sleek pencil skirts, trousers, co-ords and, as stylishly demonstrated by Hailey Bieber this week, the dress.
The model was spotted out and about in New York City on Saturday evening, having supported her husband Justin at his Saturday Night Live performance, wearing a strappy leather dress by Polish designer Magda Butrym. The design features an open-back style with tie detail, an ankle-length hem and a square neckline, making it an excellent evening dress, but one which could also be layered up to instantly make it more daywear appropriate.
But, as she was out on the town, Bieber teamed her dress simply with strappy heels, layered gold chain necklaces, a zebra clutch bag and, of course, a face mask.
Bieber is not the first A-lister to make a case for the leather dress this season. In fact, the style has emerged as one of the standout trends of the AW20 season with celebrities and influencers making a strong case for them in various iterations: long, short, fitted, loose. The style too dominated once again on the spring runways last month with the likes of Gabriela Hearst, Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Sportmax all showing leather dresses.
The leather-dress trend will come as no surprise to anyone. The fabric has been prominent on the catwalk for the past few seasons with head-to-toe leather dominating on street style last winter and leather coats, leather skirts and leather trousers everywhere this season, with even royalty at it: the Duchess of Sussex has favoured leather trousers for her last few appearances.
With a desire for hardwearing capsule classics at an all-time high, there is no surprise that leather has become such a prominent style during the past few seasons with these investments likely to last decades and to outlive any passing trends.
