It can be difficult to appreciate the strange, symmetrical beauty of perfectly planted farmland from down here on earth. That's why Wyoming-based aerial photographer Mitch Rouse took to the skies to capture the gorgeous farm terrain that stretches across the Western United States and the Pacific Northwest.

His stunning aerial photos offer a whole new perspective of the concentric designs and patchwork fields that cover the region before farmers harvest their crops. It's quite a soothing sight to behold, don't you think?

Mitch tells the art enthusiasts at Colossal that the Palouse, a scenic farm region on the Washington-Idaho border, is one of his favorite areas to photograph because of its verdant, flourishing fields.

"This year, it was particularly lush, and I was very surprised getting out there how soft and velvety the green fields looked," he says. "Unlike the first photograph (shown above), the shapes in the Palouse are much more organic, flowing and curving with the natural form of the hills."

Mitch says he takes his photos using a system he developed that involves mounting a camera and stabilizer to the nose of a helicopter.

But the true key to capturing this blend of natural and manmade beauty is spotting the land patterns in the first place.

"A lot of it ends up really just being aware of your surroundings and eventually develop an eye for what will look good, making it pretty easy to pick your targets," he says. "The key to getting these is timing it right. You want favorable light, whether it’s from clouds or sunrise or sunset."

We think it's safe to say he nailed it. Each and every one of these photos takes our breath away!
