Demera Ethiopian Restaurant is headed to Time Out Market Chicago

Get ready for sambussas, stews and other East African specialties.

New and exciting changes are coming to Time Out Market Chicago as one of the city’s best Ethiopian concepts will soon join the action in Fulton Market.

Demera Ethiopian Restaurant, the acclaimed Uptown spot renowned for the bold and vibrant flavors of East Africa, will debut on Monday, February 6. The restaurant has been a staple of Chicago’s Ethiopian-American community for more than 15 years. Chef and owner Tigist Reda opened Demera on the busy corner of Broadway Street and Lawrence Avenue in 2007 to share her culture through food.

“Cooking and entertaining has always been my passion. I just saw Demera as an opportunity to do what I love and create a career out of doing it,” Reda said.

The menu will offer a variety of dishes, sides and combinations suitable for all palates. You can enjoy starters like sambussas—fried pastries stuffed with the choice of beef, cheese or lentil and accompanied by sweet-and-spicy awaze sauce. Heartier options include a spicy and fragrant chicken stew known as doro wot, as well as shrimp tibs, a dish of sautéed shrimp with onions, tomatoes, garlic, jalapeños and awaze.

There will also be plenty of choices for vegetarians, such as honey awaze Brussels sprouts and a veggie injera roll featuring a medley of delicious vegetables rolled in a sour flatbread called injera and cut into shareable pieces. If you can't decide on just one thing, try the messob platters for a mix of meaty and plant-based entrees, which are meant to be scooped up and eaten with injeraAnd because Ethiopian cuisine is traditionally a communal affair, Time Out Market Chicago provides the ideal setting for a hands-on dining experience between family and friends. But don't worry—the portion sizes are perfect for individual diners, too.

Ready for a taste of Ethiopia? Demera will be open seven days a week (Monday through Saturday from 11am–10pm, Sunday 11am–9pm) starting February 6. In the meantime, take a look through some of the dishes that will be on the menu.
