The next generation of the Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck many of us are very excited for. The 2024 Tacoma is the big update that it's needed for a while, with an electric version also on the way. It is a mid-size electric pickup that could worry all of its rivals. At the moment, the major electric pickups on the market are the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV and Rivian R1T.

Those are the Tacoma EVs biggest rivals, with the Rivian perhaps closest due to its smaller size versus the Ford and Chevrolet. But even though it will be smaller, the Tacoma EV will have all of those rivals worried. Here is an electric pickup truck that promises a lot and will likely deliver on that promise as well.

Tacoma EV Will Be More Affordable Than The F-150 Lightning

A benefit of the smaller size compared to the other major electric pickups is that the Tacoma should be more affordable than those rivals. When it comes to its rivals, the R1T from Rivian starts at $74,800. Which is quite the jump from the F-150 Lightnings starting price of $40,000. The current 2023 Tacoma starts at $27,750 which puts it well below both of those rivals. The new 2024 electric Tacoma is likely to be higher than that. But it gives us an idea of how competitive the pricing could be.

It is important to understand that the 2024 Tacoma EV will be smaller than the F-150 Lightning and the Silverado EV. The Rivian is closer to its size. But given how expensive that is, Toyota should be able to easily undercut them on price. That will be a major advantage for the Japanese automotive manufacturer. The smaller size should not deter consumers. In fact, it could be an advantage. As mid-size trucks are more practical on tighter roads and to park in certain situations. Mid-size trucks are just as practical as their larger cousins.

The Tacoma EV Will Be Based On The New-Gen Pickup

Part of the appeal of the new Tacoma EV is the rugged look it is set to sport. Design pattents recently leaking out in Brazil showed what looks like the final design. It is similar to the concept we saw from Toyota in 2022. That is an indication that it is the final design. And the Tacoma is now more in-line with Toyota’s range of off-roaders. Design cues from the Tunda such as the slats underneath the headlights are part of that. As is the very rugged looking grille and fascia.

It is a marked step forward over the outgoing generation of the Tacoma. The current generation received a facelift back in 2020. But it is now very much showing its age appearance wise next to the big, bulky new version for 2024. Compared to the other electric trucks currently on the market, you could argue that Toyota will have the best looking truck of the lot. However, even if it is perhaps a slightly aging truck looks wise, the outgoing Tacoma is still a capable machine.

The Tacoma Already Has A Very Strong Reputation

Toyota has built up a fantastic reputation with their pickups and off-roaders over the years. And the current Tacoma is no exception. We ourselves have reviewed the current version of the Tacoma and praised it for its ruggedness, reliability and its performance off-road. The manual transmission adds an extra element of fun to the pickup truck, while it is also very comfortable. The only real problem is the outdated infotainment system, but the new Tacoma will fix this in a flash. Toyota will no doubt build upon the reputation that the Tacoma has already built up over the years.

The Tacoma is versatile, and includes everything that you need while it doesn’t add anything that you don’t. In an era of gimmicks and gizmos on vehicles, that is very refreshing. We have no reason to believe that the Tacoma EV won’t be the same, and it will likely offer something equally rewarding.

The 2024 Tacoma is a pickup truck that will boost the Toyota range further. The EV version is particularly exciting. Coming amidst the wave of new electric pickup trucks we are seeing each year. Ford and Chevrolet will be watching over their shoulders. Their trucks might be larger, but the Tacoma will have plenty of bite. And it may well force them into creating their own mid-size pickup truck with electric power. A new Tacoma has been a long time coming, but the 2024 generation looks like it will be very exciting.
