Quebec Health Minister Christian Dube announced that the province will introduce a vaccine passport starting September 1 after testing a pilot project over the next two weeks.
The province will test the smartphone app at a Quebec City restaurant and Laval gym over the next two weeks.
The Quebec government is expecting to use the passport for non-essential high-risk activities like gyms, team sports, bars, restaurants, arts and entertainment, festivals and other major events.
With COVID-19 cases rising in the province, the government wants to allow only those who have been vaccinated access to non-essential activities rather than shutting them down.
Christian Dube said the government will release more details about the vaccine passport over the next few days.

According to the government website, “a vaccine passport will not be required for access to essential services like education (primary, secondary, post-secondary), and employers will not be able to require one as a hiring criteria.”
Today, Quebec reported 234 new cases, bringing the total number of people infected to 379,673.
84 per cent of Quebecers have received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 70 per cent is fully vaccinated.
