According to the Ferrari website: “The Ferrari 488 Pista is powered by the most powerful V8 engine in the Maranello marque’s history and is the company’s special series sports car with the highest level yet of technological transfer from racing.

“In fact the name, meaning ‘track’ in Italian, was chosen specifically to testify to Ferrari’s unparalleled heritage in motor sports.”

It is not known if any other cars were involved in the incident or if there were any injuries.

A weather warning to motorists had been issued by local police reminding drivers to ensure they drove to the conditions with bouts of heavy rain leaving standing water and roads dangerously wet in places.

Officers said it was an "expensive trip" for the motorist and stated there had been a number of similar incidents in the High Peak over the weekend.

Derbyshire Police tweeted: "An expensive trip up the Woodhead Pass today for this driver. One of a number of reported collisions today across the High Peak."

Residents said on social media convoys of supercars were seen in the area over the wet and rainy weekend travelling through the picturesque countryside.

Daniel Hampson wrote: "Saw about 8 / 9 Ferrari's today pass me as I was heading out of Glossop towards Crowden, then a bit further on and this one on its roof! Sure enough it was supposed to be with the others! Ooops!"

Aaron Foster put: "Was a nice car, a shame it didn't have a nice driver who knew how to drive it... money doesn't equal ability! "

And Paul Davis said: "You would be absolutely gutted wouldn't you. Seeing your pride and joy smashed up like that in a bush...unlucky mate!"
