Bajaj Chetak EV Scooty: Price of affordable retro-themed electric scooter increases by THIS much, details here

Bajaj Chetak EV Scooty: The Bajaj Chetak has also experienced a significant price hike as has been the case with several other high-end electric two-wheelers as a result of changes made to FAME-II subsidies. The starting price of the Chetak, which was Rs. 1.22 lakh up till last month, is now Rs. 1.44 lakh (ex-showroom, including updated FAME-II subsidy and omitting state subsidies). The government’s decision to reduce incentives for electric two-wheelers under the FAME-II scheme is the direct cause of the price increase, which amounts to almost Rs 22,000 in total.

With effect from June 1, the Chetak’s entire FAME-II subsidy decreased from Rs. 43,500 to Rs. 22,500. The heavy industries ministry said late in May that it will cap incentives at 15% of an E2W’s ex-factory price and revise the subsidy to Rs 10,000 per kWh of battery capacity, resulting in a sharp increase in the cost of practically all electric scooters and motorbikes currently on the market in the nation.

In March, Bajaj announced a price reduction for the Chetak, which has remained almost unchanged from the vehicle’s launch at the beginning of 2020. The company gave as reasons a restructure of its EV supply chain and advancements in a number of development projects with important vendors. The battery-powered scooter was previously available in normal and “Premium” trims, but Bajaj only shows the Premium model on its website now. It is still available in four colours: gold, blue, red, and black.

The 2.88 kWh lithium-ion battery powering the Chetak gives it a top speed of 63 kph, a practical range of up to 90 km, and a charging time of around four hours to reach 100%. A colour LCD instrument cluster, Bluetooth connectivity, tamper warning, geo-fencing, and the ability to get over-the-air (OTA) updates are among the features of the Chetak.

Know about the unit

The Chetak’s pricing has recently increased, bringing it closer to other high-end electric scooters like the Ather 450X, Ola S1 Pro, and Vida V1 Pro. Its on-road cost currently exceeds Rs 1.50 lakh in most places where governmental incentives are not available. Bajaj saw sales of the Chetak reach an all-time high prior to the price increase, with more than 10,000 units of the e-scooter being registered nationwide in May.
