Topline

Two towns in New Hampshire where voters cast their ballots just after midnight on Election Day have already declared their results, with Biden sweeping one and Trump winning the other.

Key Facts

In Dixville Notch, all five votes were cast in favor of Joe Biden.

This result meant that the Democratic challenger is the first candidate to sweep the election in Dixville Notch since 1960, when Richard Nixon won all nine votes over John F. Kennedy, the New York Times reports.

Millsfield, which also voted at midnight on Tuesday, went in favor of President Donald Trump by 16 votes to 5.

The coronavirus pandemic prompted Harts Location, another town that carries the midnight voting tradition, to get its 48 voters to go to the polls after sunrise.

Key Background

Tuesday’s results were similar to the 2016 election where Millsfield had voted for Trump, while Dixville Notch went for Hillary Clinton. The midnight voting tradition in these towns for both the primaries and the general elections has been in place since 1960. In 2012, Obama had won New Hampshire by 5.6 points while Hillary had beaten Trump by a much smaller margin of 0.3 points in 2016.

Big Number

8 points. That’s the polling lead Biden presently has in New Hampshire over Trump, according to a poll published by the University of New Hampshire. Data from FiveThirtyEight shows Biden is heavily favored to win the state, with a sample of 100 outcomes showing Biden winning 89 times, compared with Trump winning 11 times.
