French architecture firm Hamonic+Masson & Associés has unveiled an intriguing residential tower concept located in the coastal city of Limassol, Cyprus. Named the Limassol Tower, the structure seeks to capture the beauty of the surrounding context by overlooking the breathtaking Mediterranean horizon.

Most notably, however, the architects have introduced a unique proposal for an expressive structure and new type of residential design. Influenced by flower petals, each unit features a round, corolla-shaped platform containing a swimming pool or planted greenery.

The Limassol Tower design strategy creates a condition akin to independent islands. The “petals” or swimming pool balconies are simultaneously in direct connection with the interiors of the apartments, creating a unique and luxurious interior space. The system of corollas extends to the ground floor in the shape of brise soleil and paving, creating connections between the dwellings and the outdoor spaces. The landscaping surrounding the tower serves as an extension of the project’s distinctive, sculptural aesthetic.

The total transparency of the building’s façade ensures unobstructed sea views. A sliding door is the only element that separates the living space and balcony in each unit, serving to invite the outdoors within. Given the undoubtedly high cost of constructing such a building, the project faces an uphill battle move beyond the conceptual phase, but makes for a thought provoking idea for residential living. Whether it is structurally viable, safe and sustainable is also open to question, but regardless, Hamonic+Masson & Associés’ renderings are sure to get people talking about new possibilities for condominium design.
