Two killed as Sydney pursuit ends in 'ball of flames'
A police chase through Sydney’s inner west has ended with the death of two people after their car rolled and burst into flames in Strathfield overnight.
Highway patrol officers say they were monitoring Centenary Drive just before 12.30am when they tried to pull over a silver Audi, however the driver failed to stop, sparking a police pursuit.
Tragically the vehicle crashed on the entry ramp to the M4 motorway in Homebush a short time later, rolling several times onto its roof and bursting into flames.
Witnesses pulled over and joined the police officers in trying to rescue the people trapped inside the car, however they couldn’t be saved.
Footage captured by Nine News reveals flames billowing from the vehicle in what the news outlet described as a "ball of flames".
Fellow drivers can be seen pulled over in an adjacent lane on the major highway, unable to help as the fire engulfed the vehicle. One person is pictured with their hands above their head as at least six people stand by the side of the road unable to help.
Once Fire and Rescue NSW had extinguished the blaze, two bodies were found inside the vehicle. They’re yet to be formally identified.
A critical incident team from the Fairfield City Police Area Command is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and what led to the double fatality.
