NEW YORK — Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Friday the state-mandated closure of New York schools will be extended an additional two weeks amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Schools across the state will now have to be closed until April 15 at the soonest, Cuomo said.
New York City public schools will still be closed until April 20, an order from Mayor Bill de Blasio earlier this month.
Cuomo’s initial order kept schools statewide closed until April 1, but with COVID-19 cases increasing and the outbreak spreading, the governor has deemed it necessary to keep them closed another two weeks out of precaution.
With 44,635 confirmed COVID-19 cases and a statewide death toll of 519, as of Friday, New York is the epicenter of the nation’s conronavirus pandemic.
New York City alone claims 25,398 of the state’s total COVID-19 cases, Cuomo announced Friday.
