It's the first statewide popular vote in favor of transgender rights.

Massachusetts voters have passed Question 3. The initiative upholds protections for transgender people against discrimination in public spaces like restaurants, hotels, and hospitals. This victory marks the first statewide popular vote in support of transgender rights.

"Today, the people of Massachusetts voted to uphold the rights of their transgender neighbors to be free from discrimination and told the forces of hate they are too late, no one is going back in the closet," said Rea Carey, executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund.

"While groups such as the Alliance Defending Freedom used this ballot initiative to push ugly myths against transgender people, progressive activists did not push lies or spin. We succeeded by simply telling the stories of everyday people that would have been impacted had this anti-discrimination law been repealed."

Yes on 3 was passed weeks after the Trump administration released a memo with plans to legally define sex as biological.
