Google Maps is rolling out a trio of new features for iOS users, including live location sharing, widgets, and dark mode.

Live Location Sharing

Whether announcing your ETA, searching for a friend in a crowd, or assuring a loved one you're home safe, there is no shortage of ways to convey location from your iPhone—including Google Maps' latest update.

The mapping platform now lets users share their real-time location while texting "so you can stay safe and never miss a beat," Google Maps Product Manager Herman Ng wrote in a blog announcement.

Tap the colorful Maps icon in iMessage to disclose your location for one hour (by default), or up to three days; press the "stop" button at the bottom of the in-app thumbnail to end the broadcast.

Google Maps Search Widget

"One of Google Maps' most powerful features is the ability to see live traffic conditions in an area," according to Ng. "With the new nearby traffic widget, you can now access this information from your current location right from your home screen."

This should make it easy to tell how crowded the roads are, and whether you'll need to take a different route or should just stay put until the cars clear. To install, touch and hold an existing widget or empty area of your iPhone home screen. Once apps start shaking, look for the plus sign in the upper-left corner. From there, you can search for and tap the Google Maps app, then swipe to select which widget you want—small square traffic view or rectangular access to your favorite places and frequent destinations.

Dark Mode

Months after Apple launched system-wide support for dark mode, Google Maps is finally introducing the in-app feature to give your eyes (and battery) a break. Simply visit the platform's Settings, tap "dark mode," and select "on."

All three new features will be available this month to everyone using Google Maps on iOS. The company in March teased more than 100 AI-powered improvements coming this year, including indoor Live View, weather conditions, eco-friendly transportation options, and curbside grocery pickups.
