Modified 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ81

This 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser is a Japanese-market example which is powered by a 4.2-liter turbodiesel straight-six paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, a two-speed transfer case, and three locking differentials. The truck was acquired by the seller from an importer in Houston, Texas three years ago, and has since been refinished in white with tri-color vinyl graphics. Additional modifications include a suspension lift over 35″ tires, aftermarket bumpers, rocker protection, a roof rack with a storage box, camping drawers with a stove and sleeping platform, four-wheel disc brakes, a touchscreen stereo with a backup camera, LED auxiliary lighting, and more. The differentials, transmission, and transfer case have been serviced under current ownership along with the air conditioning system and steering knuckles. This HDJ81 is offered with spare parts, an uninstalled roll cage, service records, and a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.

Originally gray, the body was refinished in white with period racing-style red, orange, and yellow stripes using PPG paint and vinyl graphics in 2018. Exterior modifications include a Trail Gear front bumper with an A-bar and a Hi-Lift jack mount, a Smittybilt X20 12k-lb. winch with synthetic line and a hawse fairlead, an ARB roof basket with a color-matched Yakima Skybox, an ARB snorkel, White Knuckle rock sliders, and a 4×4 Labs rear bumper with a spare tire carrier, a towing receiver, and recovery points. Four 7″ round LED lamps on the front bumper are joined by 8″ versions and a rear-facing light bar mounted to the roof rack. Aftermarket head- and taillights have also been fitted.

A walk-around video is shown above. Bronze-finished 17″ American Racing ATX 201 wheels are shod with 35″x12.5″ General Grabber tires, and a matching spare is mounted at the rear. A four-wheel disc brake conversion was carried out with parts from a later 100-Series Land Cruiser as well as Terrain Tamer slotted rotors, pads, and braided lines.

The right-hand-drive cabin features front seats which are protected by black leather covers as well as a center console with an armrest and a cooler box. The driver’s seat features power lumbar adjustment and adjustable side bolsters. Equipment includes power-operated windows, locks, and retractable rearview mirrors as well as a ceiling-mounted altimeter and compass. Rubber mats cover the floors. A suede-wrapped aftermarket steering wheel frames instruments including a six-digit mechanical odometer which reads 175k kilometers (~109k miles), approximately 25k miles of which have been added by the seller. Additional modifications include a Pioneer touchscreen with aftermarket speakers, a remote control, and a backup camera display. The automatic climate control system was serviced in July 2018 with a new Denso air conditioning compressor and receiver drier.

The rear seats have been replaced with custom storage drawers housing a camp stove, silverware, tools, and more. The top of the storage unit doubles as a flat sleeping platform. Tours of the interior and engine bay are shown in this video from the seller.

The 4.2-liter 1HD-T turbodiesel inline-six sends power to all four wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission, a two-speed transfer case, and factory locking front, center, and rear differentials. The turbocharger has been modified to run 14 psi of boost, and the truck is equipped with a safari-style intercooler from Endless Horizon Outfitters as well as a replacement exhaust system without a catalytic converter. The power steering reservoir and pump were replaced under current ownership, and the transmission, transfer case, and differentials were flushed with synthetic fluids in July 2018.

A 3″ Icon Stage II lift with Slinky HD springs and Metal Tech coil spacers was installed in February 2018 by Jace Wheel and Tire Specialists of Houston. Also fitted were an Old Man Emu steering stabilizer, Slee Performance caster correction plates, and Black Hawk extended control arms. The radius arms and bushings, tie rod ends, and drag links were replaced and the steering knuckles rebuilt with new ARP studs the following August. The axles, inner fenders, and other undercarriage components were coated in preparation for the sale.

The sale includes removed stock parts as well as an uninstalled bolt-in roll cage, an unused 2,000-watt power inverter, tools, an air compressor, recovery gear, and service records from current ownership. Driving and function demonstration videos are viewable below.
