Savvy shoppers say this $14.95 supermarket air freshener is almost IDENTICAL to a sell-out $485 designer perfume

  • Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille fragrance is one of the brand's most premium scents
  • Customers can purchase a 100ml bottle for $485 or a 250ml bottle for $885
  • But one woman has discovered an air freshener that smells exactly the same
  • Febreze Air Odour-Eliminating Air Freshener with Wood is $14.95 on Amazon
  • The brand is also available in Australia to purchase from Coles and Woolworths

A savvy shopper has likened Tom Ford's premium 'Tobacco Vanille' fragrance to a $14.95 supermarket air freshener, saying they have the exact same musk scent.

The designer label perfume, which was launched in 2007, can be purchased at Myer and David Jones in a 100ml bottle for $485 or a currently sold-out 250ml bottle for $885.

But Instagram user Sydney Grace discovered that a spray bottle of Febreze's air freshener in the scent 'wood', which can be purchased on Amazon, smells nearly identical.

'I've used Febreze before, but it's always just been one of those things your parents have in their guest bathroom,' she said on the social media's Story platform.

It hadn't occurred to her to spray the air freshener on herself but now she sprays it 'everywhere and on everything'.

'If they sold the "Wood" scent in a perfume I would totally buy it. No shame,' she said.

And she's not the only person to take a shining to the musky scent.

'This is amazing. It has such a rich scent. It's like walking into old money and it lingers awhile. My house smells richer I swear. I just walk around spraying and smiling... I wish they made it into a perfume,' said one shopper.

Is it safe to use air freshener as perfume?

Most air fresheners have a warning label on the back that says they shouldn't be inhaled directly or used on our delicate skin.

Suzy Nightingale, of Fragrantica.com, the online perfume encyclopaedia, agrees that home fragrances offer an inexpensive hit of scent per spray, but warns: 'Room sprays are cheaper to produce and buy than their perfume equivalent because they tend to contain a higher concentration of chemicals and alcohol, which can cause skin irritation.

'That's why it's not advisable to wear them directly on the skin - waft onto a scarf or jacket for the same effect. For a longer-lasting effect, you could spray into your hair.'

'Out of all the Febreze scents this is by far my favourite,' said another.

A third added: 'The fragrances are like very high end niche perfumes. I truly applaud Frebreeze for stepping up their game'.

According to Huffington Post air fresheners are just diluted perfumes so if you like a less intense musk to linger on your clothing it's a good option.

But it shouldn't be applied directly to your skin, as the high alcohol concentration can cause a reaction.

They are far cheaper to purchase overall, with Frebreze available in Australia at Woolworths and Coles.

Unfortunately the 'wood' scent isn't currently on the shelves but you can purchase the twin pack from Amazon for less than $15 and it will ship straight to your door.
