But in a first-of-its-kind feat, Israel has tested drones which can use AI to glide ahead on their own even when GPS connectivity is weak or interrupted, to mark a new level of efficiency in transportation.
Created by Israeli startup Sightec, the drone entirely relies on its own judgment powered by computer vision and smart tech, to reach its destination and avoid crashes without human assistance. The test was conducted on five routes in Southern Israel, and displayed the aerial gadget's capacity to pull off deliveries seamlessly.
The drones are equipped by the firm's software NaviSight, which transforms a camera embedded on the device, into a sensor which is backed by video processing. Being empowered to identify its surroundings in real-time via machine learning, the delivery vehicle can function like a human pilot.
Drones which can find their own way won't have to depend on GPS which is vulnerable to cyber attacks, and the innovation also protects people from drones crashing into building when they lose connectivity to navigation systems. The autonomous ops are being pitched as a provision for emergency situations, and the drones also deploy 3D mapping to help the software sidestep obstacles.
More trial flights will be conducted in other parts of Israel before the technology finally takes off to serve consumers. The development follows announcement regarding the arrival of AI driven robots for grocery and food deliveries in UAE.
