  • The new YouTube Music app is now available on select Wear OS 2 watches.
  • Users are able to download music to their devices and enjoy offline listening.
  • Eligible devices include Gen 6 models from Fossil Group and more.

YouTube Music brings good news to Wear OS users who haven’t made the jump to a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4. Starting this week, select devices running Wear OS 2 will also be able to access the music app. Most notably, this means long-awaited support for offline listening, a feature many athletes prize.

If you’re a Wear OS 2 user who thinks silent runs are boring, (or if you can’t stand the sound of your own heavy breathing), YouTube Music is an exciting app to welcome on board. In addition to accessing more than 80 million songs, Premium subscribers can download music straight to their device for offline listening. This means having all your favorite songs and playlists right on your wrist. The app also features Smart Downloads, which will automatically update your downloaded music whenever your device connects to Wi-Fi.

YouTube Music isn’t the first app to offer offline listening to Wear OS 2 users, as we saw a similar move from Spotify last month. However, for some, the announcement is a tiny bit of consolation while waiting for Wear OS 3. Watches eligible for the updated platform still have a while before it arrives mid-to-late next year. In the meantime, YouTube Music is a nice perk to see sooner. Shoppers considering a new Fossil Gen 6 should also be happy to see this rollout, as the device is among the first Wear OS 2 watches with access.

Not all Wear OS 2 watches will get immediate access to the new app. The rollout begins with a few popular devices and will continue rolling out to additional watches later this year.  The first wave of eligibility includes the following:

Other Wear OS 2 watches should certainly stay tuned for future rollouts. Once your device is eligible the app will be available in the Google Play Store.
