Warning: ‘Wolverine’ Leaks Begin After Alleged Insomniac Hack

Following

We just finished watching the debut of Grand Theft Auto 6, which was damaged a bit by the fact that an enormous hack released loads of early development footage from the game years ago, revealing things like its location and protagonists.

Now, it’s Sony’s Insomniac which has reportedly been hit by a ransomware attack, and leaks have begun with likely more to follow.

It’s a bad situation, where the hacking group Rhysida is currently running a public auction for the data it says it has for $2 million in bitcoin, with a weeklong deadline. As proof that they have the data, they have released a few in-game (poor quality) screenshots of the in-development Wolverine game that is Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 follow-up. They also have access to employee personal data including even passport images, which have also been posted. From the hacker’s listing:

“With just 7 days on the clock, seize the opportunity to bid on exclusive, unique, and impressive data. Open your wallets and be ready to buy exclusive data. We sell only to one hand, no reselling, you will be the only owner!”

I will not share or link the leaks here. The Wolverine screenshots are circulating online and do not show story spoilers, but just a pair of costumes. Though if this group has as much data as they claim, there’s no telling what could happen in the near future, and what exactly might be released about the game, so you may want to begin muting certain terms to be safe.

It’s an extremely unfortunate situation. The GTA hack did in fact lead to prison time for the hacker (who has recently said once he’s out of prison he will go right back to hacking), but it’s unclear where this current Insomniac situation will lead. And it’s certainly possible that in the scramble to clean this up and recover, development on Wolverine and other projects could be delayed as a result.

If this seven day deadline expires and either no one buys it, or someone malicious buys it, the end result likely is a lot more information being shared. Obviously the top priority is the personal information of employees, as leaks are annoying, but not actively dangerous, whereas posting things like addresses and passport information would be. These situations are always incredibly tough and it looks like this will not be an exception.
