Veteran actress and long-time activist Jane Fonda recently intensified her efforts to combat climate change, connecting the issue directly with broader social injustices. Throughout this past week, Fonda, 86, engaged multiple audiences across California, from star-studded fundraisers in Beverly Hills to informative sessions with college students at USC Annenberg.

At the core of Fonda’s activism is her fight against the potential reversal of California’s SB 1137—a landmark bill signed by Governor Gavin Newsom that prohibits the establishment of new oil and gas wells within 3,200 feet of residential areas, schools, and medical facilities. This bill, Fonda argues, is crucial for safeguarding the health of millions. She highlighted that nearly 3 million Californians live close to oil wells, underscoring the human impact of such industries.

Fonda’s activism week kicked off with “Art for a Safe and Healthy California,” a fundraiser hosted at the prestigious Gagosian Gallery. The event, co-hosted with celebrities including John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, sold donated art to Support efforts keeping SB 1137 intact. High-profile attendees like Chelsea Handler and Maria Shriver showcased their broad Support for this cause.

At USC, Fonda didn’t just educate; she apologized to younger generations for the environmental burdens passed down to them. Her message was clear: acknowledging past mistakes while empowering the next generation to foster change. Fonda’s rallying cry was one of urgency and unity—calling on all to raise awareness and confront the industries perpetuating ecological and social inequities.

Reflecting on her extensive experience, from being arrested for her protests to starting the “Fire Drill Fridays” rallies, Fonda has remained a formidable figure in the environmental movement. Her actions and words this week reinforced her commitment to fighting the climate crisis, which she vividly describes as intertwined with racism, misogyny, and patriarchy. Her continued dedication serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle for a healthier planet and a just society.
